Can't You Hear, Can't You Hear When the Moon Is Bright and Clear
Reading some of the entries in other blogs lately about music, and being a music fanatic myself, I thought it might be interesting to open up some discussion on the rhythms from various corners of the world. Sometimes it's hard discovering quality music, especially international music, without a little nod from others.
So what are people listening to that gets their booties shakin', minds swirling, soul relaxin' or tears flowing?
My recommendation for the moment (as it is 5:06 a.m.) is Kings of Convenience, a band comprised of two Norwegians on acoustic guitars. Definitely some good music for those "I'm going to take a slow stroll and think at 2 a.m. moods". Recommended songs: "Little Kids", "Summer on the Westhill", "I Don't Know What I Can Save You From"
Another, if you haven't heard of them, is Yonder Mountain String Band. Not international if you're reading this from the U.S., but if you're somewhere else definitely international. Kind of a progressive bluegrass band, that can always get your toes tappin'. They do some pretty amazing covers (including Crazy Train, Zappa, and Dylan) in addition to their great originals.
A Candle Throws Its Light Into the Darkness
I read a card that I received a while back today. It made me smile. Back to the path, I have to let 'em know.
SIlent in the Morning, Suspended in the Trees
It is currently 5:01 a.m. and as most are still shaking dreams from within, I have just returned to the homestead. This caps off a stretch of five days straight that I have been studying post 4 a.m. (would be 7 but i cached out at 3:15 on Saturday...weak).
The walk home was most enjoyable, a gentle snowfall to dust the warming flannel, beach pail clipped to the pack, silence.
Swahili test at 8:50 so I better catch a few.
P.S. You know you're from Wisconsin when things like, "I like it when it's snowing in the morning, because then you know it's not that cold out," flow effortlessly from your tongue.
I Just Wanna Rock DJ
Alright so AIESEC-Madison is working on organizing our first Alumni Dinner.
We are extremely pumped about this, but kind of like your first time you aren't entirely certain how to go about it. That's why we're looking for all you "older siblings" out there to shed a little previous experience knowledge on the topic. Here's the general idea to get people to come:
-We are planning to invite members, SN's, alumni, and businesses
-We are thinking about having it on a Sunday afternoon. We think that this will be the best time to allow alumni to travel here, as most do not currently reside in Madison. (We realize that a weekday evening would probably be best for businesses, but we want to focus this on reconnecting with alumni, if businesses come, superb, but that's not our main focus)
AGENDA:-Welcoming
-Appetizers, Drinks, Etc. --> Socializing time
-Dinner
-Mission Presentation (during dessert)
-Alumni/Business Recognition
-Awards (Exceptional jobs in various parts of exchange, we're planning on keeping this short)
-Updates
-SN/Trainee Impact Speaker
-Closing
I know there are a number of alumni that have blogs so I'd love to get your input on this. What would you like to see happen at an Alumni Dinner. Or if you have been to events like this before what did you like/dislike about them?
Also anyone who has organized something like this before, if you have any input it would be greatly appreciated as well!
P.S. For you Madison Alum we are
considering having this the Sunday after Mifflin Street Block Party, so if you're interested you can come down early and relieve the glory.
Just Write It on the Walls of the Cave
I wish this would happen more often... a little peak back in time.
A whole grid of electricity was knocked out earlier today and again tonight here in Madison. It's great! The streets are dark, as candles flicker from shadowed windows. People yell up to their friends from the sidewalk as the intercom system is out of comission. Something so refreshing about it. Although, it is inhibiting my ability to write a paper from the comfort of my home.
I wonder what this is costing local restaurants though, I hope most have back-up generators.
Oooohhhh, What a Beautiful Buzz, What a Beautiful Buzz
Holly, Connie, and a newbie (yet to be named) came down for the night, on their way to ROKS.
The down side: I haven't seen them yet, I am at the library, and have been for a couple hours.
The bright side: I am drunk and heading home, most likely to shake it like a Polaroid picture until I have to go to Swahili at 8:50 a.m.
There was much that I need to accomplish this evening including: homework; applying for United Leaders; and chillin' with the St. Cloud villains. Being a fan of multi-tasking I developed a great plan to accomplish everything I had hoped. I concocted a Nalgene full of Caucasian (see Big lebowski for details), got my books together, and trekked to the library.
The plan: Study until I am drunk, then join the festivities back at the homestead (aka "The Lodge")
Having a date with Helen C. White while drunk is surprisingly more fun than I expected. the people all seem extremely interested in the milky mocha concoction that I sip from the newly acquired Miller Lite bottle. I think I will utilize this plan more often on Friday and Saturday nights.
Well it seems that the bottle is nearly empty, meaning it's about that time for me to head back to the garden, for the garden is a room of scholarship.
